This half day tour is designed particularly for those wishing to learn about Vietnam in general and military history of Hanoi in particular, reflecting some prominent fights against the enemies and expressing the talent mind of Vietnamese leaders, their military strategy, military arts, etc, understand more about the proud Vietnamese military history.
Itinerary explore military history of Hanoi
This half day tour Hanoi could be either in the morning or afternoon.
8.00 pick up at your hotel, start your tour first visit the Military History Museum (Address: 28A Dien Bien Phu Street, Ba Dinh district), where photos and war remains will give you a first approach of Vietnamese history through its conflicts. Visit nearby Hanoi Flag tower and learn why it is one of the most respected symbols of the country.
Next visit to Hoa Lo Prison (Address: 1 Hoa Lo Street, Hoan Kiem District), built and used by French rulers in Vietnam for political prisoners, and then by the government of North Vietnam for war prisoners. The name Hoa Lo, which translates as “fiery furnace”, “stove,” or “fire kiln” comes from a village name, specializing in making all kinds of casserole, portable earthen stove…Hoa Lo Prison gives visitors a small taste of the harsh conditions and suffering endured by the prisoners who would become Vietnamese national heroes, and a chance to marvel at their resilience and strong spirits.
This building is also known by the name of “Hanoi Hilton” and “hosted” some American prisoners such as Senator John McCain and Pete Peterson, United States’ first post-war ambassador to Vietnam in 1997.
Continue moving to the B-52 Victory Museum (Location: 157 Doi Can Street, Ba Dinh District), displaying relics of B-52 stratofortress, an aircraft that played a major role in the American war. On the way back, you also see a small lake contains wreckage of a B-52 bomber shot down over Hanoi in 1972. (now also called B-52 lake).
On the last 12 days and nights of December 1972, the military and people of Hanoi, along with the entire nation, achieved the victory known as the “Hanoi-Dien Bien Phu in the Air.” They successfully repelled the strategic bombing campaign by the United States using B-52 bombers over Hanoi and Haiphong, forcing the U.S. government to sign the Paris Agreement to stop the wars in Vietnam. And B52 Victory Museum is the place affirming the intelligence and heroic spirit of Vietnam!
Last on your journey to the Long Bien bridge (originally named Doumer Bridge), built in 1902 by Sir Gustave Eiffel’s company. Take a walking tour of this fascinating structure to learn more on its role in war time.
